An Environment for Thoughtful Literacy
The Intimate Classroom
Our students need to feel free to express themselves. When children feel comfortable and can share their opinions during meaningful conversation, their comprehension will deepen. It is our job as educators to develop a risk-free and safe environment for learning. When quality discussion occurs in a risk-free classroom, students are invited to share themselves and connections to text can develop.
Discussion can be inspiring and also deepens comprehension as students make connections to others. Our classmates help us to understand and comprehend text in a way that we can't do on our own. Conversations that take place during authentic reading and writing exercises help our students to grow as readers and writers. Students need to be taught to be respectful, good listeners, active participants and encouraging to their friends. Teachers should model these qualities on a daily basis in order to promote an intimate classroom.
